Riven's Caveats for Meta Builds
So, I want to address my personal opinion with regards to meta builds that you may find online, whether it be from MetaBattles, official forums, DnT videos, or Pro League players. I'm not going to stray people from using these resources; however, I want people to understand what goes behind these builds to make yourself a better player, and not just a "I'm going to copy this guy. Shit! It doesn't work. This build must be bad!"
CAVEAT 1: Not all builds fit all situations
Keep in mind that Guild Wars 2 builds and gameplay is VERY situational. If you are solo'ing Lupicus, your build layout will be different than if you are solo'ing Bloomhunger, which is different than if you are on Orb Duty in raids for Gorseval, which is different than if you were doing DPS group in Tequatl. You have to view your weaponset and 6-0 all as "utilities" and you need to bring the right setup that works for the specific fight.
CAVEAT 2: Not everybody can execute every build
We all have our personal skill level as far as how we can micromanage our keyboards when gaming. Some builds are so tight in timing and cooldowns that some of us literally are not skilled enough to perform to those levels. So, don't burn yourself if you cannot repeat DnT's rotation on a golem. Your overall proficiency is finding the build layout that works best for YOU.
CAVEAT 3 (regarding Raids): Raids are about mechanics, trust, and responsiveness
Just because you have a token build for dungeons, fractals, or have 1000's of hours on your class does NOT mean you are ready for raids. There is a constant struggle with the general GW2 community with regards to "DPS tunnel vision." Most wipes on raid bosses are NOT because of lack of dps or team comp. Yes, you need to be pumping out the numbers and working on ascended gear; however, you also need to make builds that fit the fight and the role you are assigned. Raids are about trust and responsibilities... you need to do your part, and trust everybody else is doing theirs. So, when you are asked to bring more cc... it might decrease your personal DPS, but it might increase 3 other people's dps in return. A good raid build allows you to react to environmental/boss mechanics while returning to your rotation quickly. If your build is reliant on an uninterrupted 10-button combo... and you end up getting teleported and dying halfway through... how does that help? DPS of a dead person is 0.
With that said, please use these resources and chat with any guild Raid Leaders about how your classes fit in [XP] overarching strategies:
